Local Rowing Organizations Hammer It Out at Pellissippi Indoor Sprints

Freezing temperatures prevent traditional on-the-water rowing competitions this time of year. So, to heat things up, two local rowing organizations brought hammers and ergs to compete indoors.

On February 13, ETRO finished winter training with a friendly erg competition at the first Pellissippi Indoor Sprints held at the Oak Ridge Rowing Association (ORRA) boathouse.

Members of ETRO and Atomic Rowing competed side by side on indoor rowing ergometers or ergs, which simulate on-the-water rowing movements. Top finishes with the quickest time in each category were presented with an unusual hammer trophy.

Traditionally, winter training ends the last weekend of January at the Tennessee Indoor Championships in Chattanooga. Unfortunately, inclement weather prevented the teams from attending this year. To provide their members with a competitive and fun event for winter training, coaches from ETRO and Atomic Rowing organized the Pellissippi Indoor Sprints.

ETRO took the title in the Junior Women's Coxswain 500 Dash and earned second place finishes in the Junior Men Varsity and Junior Men Novice events.
